Build playground at Bret Harte Elementary June 22

On Monday, June 22, 2009 California First Lady Maria Shriver and CaliforniaVolunteers, with the help of national nonprofit KaBOOM! and hundreds of volunteers will construct an intergenerational playground at Bret Harte Elementary School in San Francisco to celebrate the life and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez and his commitment to community service.

California's First Lady Maria Shriver will help lead this one-day playground building project.

We need volunteers to help assemble the playground, mural and garden. No experience is necessary.

Washington High restores native plants

Washington High’s Earth Science and Marine Science classes will install a native plant garden at their school and now the students will put their knowledge to work with native plant restoration at the Presidio.

Longfellow Elementary students reduce their carbon footprints

Longfellow Elementary students use “Walk to Win Wednesdays” to help reduce their carbon footprints. They have a “walking school bus,” aconvoy of over 20 Longfellow students and their families, who meet near school and walk together. This Wednesday, as a special Earth Day activity, students will be sorting clean, dry trash that they brought from home for an “Earth Trash Bash” where they will deliberate whether garbage is to be reused, recycled or sent to the landfill.

Lowell students learn about the environmental impact of Bayview Shipyards

A group of Lowell High students will learn the history of the Bayview Hunters Point Naval Shipyards’ environmental impact as they participate in a native plant restoration project. The students are volunteering with Literacy for Environmental Justice, whose mission is to address the ecological and health concerns of Bayview Hunters Point and surrounding communities.

When: Tuesday, April 21 / 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
