Getting started

Some schools simply promote volunteering as a valuable experience for students. Other schools have dedicated, semester-long classes that combine academics with service. While both approaches have merit, this website focuses on moving schools toward the service learning end of the spectrum.

The National Youth Leadership Council defines service learning as "a method of teaching that enriches learning by engaging students in meaningful service to their schools and communities, and integrating that service with established curricula or learning objectives."

Youth Service America suggests that service learning follows four stages: Preparation, Action, Reflection, and Celebration.
